![]() ![]() I also love the IF DSP, which allows for multiple filter selections. You can even hook up an external monitor for those with poorer/aging eyesight. The display is clear and very easy to read. The radio does have multiple menus for its settings, but after awhile they become very intuitive, although I'm not sure I would want to operate this radio while mobile. 10m is HOT right now in case you didn't know. I worked more than a hundred fifty stations during the last contest with it, most of them deep in Europe. The RX seems much quieter than my older 746, (NON-PRO), and yet hears equally as well. Had my IC-7000 in the shack for about 6 months now. I just hope I won't have to use them to often. The first radio also had the output power on 70cm drop by half, this is caused by one of the output transistors giving up as well as the speaker connector going intermittent, apparently all common faults.įortunately Icom in Australia gives a 5 year warranty on their amateur ratio equipment, although the turn around time is very slow. Again, just before another long trip and it appear to be the same problem as the first IC7000 with the transmitter driver stage doing into self destruction mode. The second IC 7000 has just gone up in smoke, most distressing while driving. One of the greatest lack of foresight is the DTMF, it is very difficult to use and it makes RLIP links a real headache. It only detect the external antenna tuner on power up, meaning, the the antenna tuner needs to be turned on first. The spectrum scope is just a toy and is virtually unusable due to the sweeping noise out of the speaker. The the microphone gain is too low to get good deviation on FM or 100% modulation on AM. The receiver on the IC7000 overloads on the HF bands very easily and I have found this to be a problem using it as a base station. When comparing it to my IC756PRO3 the main weaknesses are: I have also used it on the digital modes where its very easy and cheap to interface to my laptop using a $15 dollar after market USB cable. The speaker auto is clean and of good quality. The noise blanker/limiter is great, the variable dsp bandwidth adjustment is really good, it small, easy to mount in the car. I do like IC7000 to use as most of the feature work very well and the menus I find intuitive. May be in retrospect I should have stayed with Kenwood as I have never had any problems with their radios. The second was bought when first IC7000 went up in smoke, just a day before our trip to Western Australia, a road trip of some 5000 Mile. ![]()
